What should a law firm website include?
Published July 2026 · By Manon Vernay
Most law firm websites read like a CV: a list of practice areas, a page of bios in the third person, a contact form.
The visitor reading it isn't browsing, they're verifying a name someone already gave them. Here's what that visitor is actually checking for, in order.
What this means practically
None of this requires a bigger build, just a different brief. Most of our law firm work is the same $1,900 to $3,800 range as any professional-services site. See the full pricing breakdown: how much does a law firm website cost.
The pattern holds for expert witnesses too
If your work comes almost entirely through professional referral rather than public search, the exact same checklist applies, with one extra layer: what a solicitor checks before briefing an expert.
Mistakes law firm websites keep making
Bios written like court documents. "Ms Chen holds a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted in 2011" is accurate and lifeless. The verifying visitor wants: what does she handle, what is she like to deal with, can I picture calling her. Write bios in first person, or at least in human.
Practice-area sprawl. Listing fourteen practice areas to catch everything catches nothing: it reads as a firm with no centre of gravity. Lead with the three you actually want more of, list the rest quietly.
Making the first step feel expensive. If nothing on the site says what a first conversation costs, the visitor assumes the meter starts on hello. "First call, no charge, we tell you honestly whether you need a lawyer" removes the hesitation that loses the most referrals.
The small firm advantage, used properly
A one-partner or three-lawyer firm cannot out-gravitas a national firm's website, and should not try. What the small firm has is the thing the referred client actually wants: the person whose name they were given answers the phone. A website that leads with that, real photos, direct contact, plain language about fees, converts the exact clients the big-firm aesthetic intimidates. That register is exactly what our small business web design is built for.
