How much does a website cost in Australia? (2026)
Last reviewed: 27 September 2026 · By Manon Vernay
The short answer: a professionally built small business website in Australia usually costs $2,500 to $10,000 in 2026. A one-page site can cost as little as $750, online shops start around $5,000 to $8,500, and custom web applications run from $20,000 up.
Every market figure on this page links to where it came from. Most come from businesses that sell websites, us included, so treat them as what the market quotes. Our own prices are in the table too: landing pages from $700, and most of our websites cost $1,900 to $3,800.

Who builds it moves the price the most
Published prices for a small business website run from $1,500 for five pages (WebAdelaide) to $15,000 at the top of Website Boss's usual range. Most of that gap is who's doing the work and how many people sit between you and them.
- Freelancers and offshore developers: $1,000 to $10,000 for a website, according to Wolf IQ. White Peak Digital puts Australian web designers' hourly rates at $50 to $200.
- Agencies: $5,000 to $25,000+ for a new website (Wolf IQ). White Peak Digital puts the average agency build at $10,000 to $30,000.
- Small studios and solo professionals: usually somewhere between the two. That's where we sit, at $1,900 to $3,800 for most websites, because one person runs the whole project.
A bigger team is the right call for a large online shop or a site that has to plug into several business systems. For a service business that needs a clear, trustworthy site with five to ten pages, you're mostly paying for layers you won't use.
Does it cost more in Sydney or Adelaide?
A little, depending on who you hire. Sydney studio Keen to Design says Sydney agencies and freelancers typically charge more than their counterparts in Brisbane, Adelaide or regional areas, because of higher rents and wages.
- Sydney: most small business websites cost about $2,800 to $8,000, going by two Sydney studios' published guides. The detail is in our Sydney website cost guide.
- Adelaide: WebAdelaide starts at $1,500 for five pages, with most professional sites $3,500 to $7,500. Website Adelaide lists most small business sites at $5,500 to $7,000 + GST. Website Boss says most of its sites fall between $8,000 and $15,000. We compare these and other studios in the best web designers in Adelaide.
Your postcode matters less than your page list. A five-page service website is the same job in Wagga Wagga as it is in Surry Hills. We work with small businesses all over Australia, and the price is the same wherever you are.
What adds to the price
Once you know who's building it, the price moves with what goes into it. Wolf IQ's guide puts numbers on the usual extras:
- Online bookings: simple appointment scheduling adds $2,000 to $5,000.
- Branding: a new logo, colours and style guide adds $3,000 to $8,000.
- Photography: professional photos typically cost $1,000 to $5,000.
- Copywriting: typically $100 to $300 a page.
The words are the cost people forget. Someone has to write them, and "we'll send you the text" is where a lot of website projects stall for months. When you compare two quotes, check whether the copy is in both. We write it with you as part of every build, so it's in our price.

Running costs after launch
A website keeps costing a little after it's built. White Peak Digital puts ongoing costs at $1,000 to $3,000 a year for maintenance, domain, hosting and licences. Here's how that breaks down:
Maintenance is the line with the widest spread, so ask what the monthly fee covers: updates, backups, security, and how quickly small changes get done. Our website maintenance cost guide goes through it.
Be careful with "$0 upfront, low monthly fee" deals. Add up the total over the contract and you often pay more than a build would have cost, and you may not own the website at the end. Ask who owns the site if you stop paying. If the answer isn't "you", walk away.
Before you pay anyone, check three things
1/
What's included
Page count, copywriting, mobile layout, basic SEO setup and analytics. Get the list in writing, so two quotes compare like for like.
2/
Who owns the website afterwards
The domain, the site and the words should be yours. If the answer takes more than one sentence, that's your answer.
3/
What it costs each month after launch
Hosting, maintenance and changes. Know the monthly number before you commit.
